Liverpool missed the opportunity to strengthen their grip on a Champions League place after being held to a 0–0 draw by a resilient Leeds United side at Anfield.
Despite controlling possession for most of the match, Arne Slot team failed to find a breakthrough against Leeds well organised defence, in a game that lacked the excitement of their recent high scoring encounters.
Liverpool Struggle Without Key Attackers
Liverpool were noticeably short of attacking threat due to the absence of Mohamed Salah, who is currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, and the injured Alexander Isak.
The missing firepower was evident as the home side struggled to create clear chances, even with nearly 70 percent of the ball.
Ekitike Misses Golden Opportunity
The Reds best opening came midway through the first half when Hugo Ekitike completely mistimed a free header from Jeremie Frimpong powerful cross, sending the ball wide with the goal inviting.
That moment summed up a frustrating night for Liverpool forwards, who lacked the pace and creativity needed to break through a compact defensive block.
Leeds Defend Deep and Almost Steal the Win
Leeds manager Daniel Farke rotated his squad with one eye on the upcoming derby against Manchester United, leaving in form striker Dominic Calvert Lewin on the bench.
However, the visitors nearly snatched all three points late in the match.
Calvert Lewin Denied Late Winner
Calvert Lewin, who had scored in six consecutive matches, thought he had continued his streak when he poked the ball past Alisson Becker with 10 minutes remaining only to be ruled narrowly offside.
It was the closest either team came to winning the match.
Slot Frustrated by Lack of Creativity
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side dominance meant little without decisive moments in the final third.
“We have a lot of possession, but possession alone is not enough,” Slot said. “Against a low block, you need pace and special individual actions to create openings.”
He added that his players showed effort and desire but lacked the attacking spark needed to turn control into goals.
Leeds Gain Valuable Point
Leeds extended their unbeaten run to six matches, moving seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Daniel Farke praised his team discipline and maturity.
“A clean sheet at Anfield doesn’t happen often,” Farke said. “We had to suffer and defend, but that’s sometimes what newly promoted teams must do.”
He also explained his decision to rotate players due to fixture congestion and injury concerns.
Champions League Race Remains Tight
The draw leaves Liverpool three points ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the battle for a top four finish.
While the Reds remain unbeaten in nine matches, performances like this highlight their reliance on individual brilliance especially when key players are unavailable.
