In the third and final Test against West Indies, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first at Mount Maunganui. The decision proved highly successful as the Kiwi openers delivered an exceptional start and immediately took charge of the game.

Record Breaking Opening Partnership

Conway and Latham Create History

Devon Conway and captain Tom Latham put together a remarkable 323 run opening partnership setting a new record for the highest opening stand in a Test match played in New Zealand.

This achievement surpassed the previous record of 276 runs which had been set twice by New Zealand once against England in 1930 and again versus West Indies in 1999.

West Indies managed just one breakthrough on the opening day when Tom Latham was dismissed after scoring an impressive 137 runs. He was removed by experienced fast bowler Kemar Roach giving the visitors their only moment of relief.

At the end of Day 1, New Zealand reached 334 runs for the loss of just one wicket. Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 178 runs playing a composed and dominant innings. He was joined at the crease by Jacob Duffy, who was on 9 runs at stumps.
