Celta Vigo delivered one of the biggest surprises of the La Liga season by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Substitute Williot Swedberg scored both goals while Real Madrid collapsed under pressure finishing the match with only nine players in a frustrating and error filled evening.
Celta Vigo Capitalize on Madrid Struggles
Swedish youngster Williot Swedberg made an immediate impact after coming off the bench. In the 53rd minute he produced an extraordinary back-heel touch to redirect Bryan Zaragoza delivery past Thibaut Courtois.
Deep into stoppage time he calmly rounded Courtois to seal Celta victory and secure a vital three points.
The win lifted Celta from 14th to 10th place, while Real Madrid flawless home league record was broken after six straight victories.
Madrid Lose Momentum Ahead of Manchester City Clash
Alonso Experimental Line up Backfires
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso opted to rest Antonio Rudiger giving Alvaro Carreras a rare start in central defence. The decision quickly unraveled when Éder Militão limped off forcing Rudiger into action earlier than planned.
Despite dominating early possession Madrid struggled to break through Celta disciplined defensive block. Goalkeeper Ionut Radu denied clear opportunities from Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler keeping the hosts frustrated.
Missed Chances and Growing Pressure
Guler missed Madrid best chance of the first half, firing wide after a clever setup by Kylian Mbappé. Vinicius Junior also saw a strong attempt saved by Radu as Celta remained compact and organized.
Early in the second half Fede Valverde powerful strike was also pushed away before Celta delivered their decisive blow.
Red Cards and Rising Tension at the Bernabeu
Madrid Lose Control
The atmosphere turned chaotic as frustration grew among the Real Madrid players.
Fran GarcÃa received two yellow cards within a single minute his second coming after a reckless challenge on Swedberg leaving Madrid with 10 men.
Kylian Mbappé attempted a delicate lob that landed on the roof of the net, while substitute Gonzalo GarcÃa came close with a header, but Madrid failed to find an equaliser.
Final Minutes Collapse
In stoppage time, Alvaro Carreras was dismissed after angrily protesting a referee’s call. Reduced to nine players and visibly rattled, Madrid conceded again as Swedberg calmly rounded Courtois to complete his brace.
Post Match Reactions
Celta Praise Defensive Discipline
Borja Iglesias praised his team’s collective effort, describing the match’s ending as unusually chaotic.
“They have so much quality. It’s tough to face them. But we defended brilliantly,” he said.
“The ending was strange so many stoppages and fouls. They grew frustrated. But our away form this season has been strong.”
Alonso Criticizes Effort and Officiating
Xabi Alonso did not hide his disappointment.
“Our intensity was disappointing. We worked harder with 10 men than with 11,” he said.
“We must move on quickly. It’s only three points, and the season is long.”
He also expressed frustration with the referee:
The decisions drove us crazy. The referee was eager to book Carreras. The officiating was poor.
