India teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has once again grabbed global cricket headlines, this time for producing one of the most explosive innings ever witnessed in List A cricket. Playing for India A in the final of the Tri Nation A Series against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, the 15 year old left hander reached his half century in a mind bending 11 deliveries, shattering a record that had stood for more than two decades.

By the time he was dismissed, Sooryavanshi had carved out 94 runs off just 29 balls, an innings studded with 10 fours and 8 sixes. His effort not only set up a commanding total for India A but also pushed him to the brink of another historic milestone the fastest century in List A history.

What Happened in the Tri Series Final

The final of the triangular One Day series, which also featured Afghanistan A alongside hosts Sri Lanka A and India A, was played on Sunday in Dambulla. Batting first, India A posted 377 for 9 in their 50 overs, a total built almost entirely around Sooryavanshi's early onslaught.

Sooryavanshi Record Breaking Innings

Opening the innings, Sooryavanshi took the Sri Lankan bowling attack apart from the very first over. He raced from nought to fifty in just 11 balls, comfortably beating the previous fastest List A fifty of 12 balls, a record held since 2005 by Sri Lankan batter Kaushalya Weeraratne.

What made the achievement even more remarkable is that Weeraratne set his record six years before Sooryavanshi was even born. The teenager from Bihar continued his assault after the fifty, eventually falling for 94 off exactly 29 balls in the ninth over just six runs short of what would have been the fastest List A century in history, a mark currently held by Australian batter Jake Fraser McGurk, who reached three figures in 29 balls.

Supporting Contributions from the Middle Order

While Sooryavanshi innings grabbed the spotlight, India A's total of 377 was also built on solid contributions from the middle order:
  • Tilak Varma anchored the innings with a composed 67
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad added a useful 40
  • Anukul Roy provided a late surge with 39 off just 15 balls
  • Vipraj Nigam chipped in with a quickfire 27
These innings ensured that even after the early fireworks faded, India A kept the scoreboard ticking and finished well past the 350 run mark.

Sri Lanka A Chase Falls Short

Chasing a daunting target of 378, Sri Lanka A never quite found the rhythm needed to stay in the contest. Vinuka Sena top scored with 62, and wicketkeeper batter Sadeera Samarawickrama added a fighting 52, but regular wickets at the other end kept the required run rate climbing out of reach.

Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam were the chief wicket takers for India A, each claiming 3 wickets, while spinner Anukul Roy backed up his batting cameo with 2 important wickets to choke Sri Lanka A middle overs. The home side was eventually bowled out for 311 in the 48th over, handing India A a 66 run victory and the tri series trophy.

A Teenager Already Rewriting Cricket History

This is far from the first time Sooryavanshi has made headlines. The Bihar born batter has been on an extraordinary record breaking run over the past two years:
  • In the 2025 IPL season, he became the youngest centurion in men's T20 and IPL history, scoring a hundred against Gujarat Titans at just 14 years of age.
  • In the 2026 IPL season, playing for Rajasthan Royals, he struck 72 sixes in a single season the most by any batter in IPL history, surpassing Chris Gayle long standing mark of 59.
  • He also became the youngest player ever to win the IPL Orange Cap, finishing the season as the competition leading run scorer with 776 runs.
  • Before this List A fifty record, he had already become the youngest player to score a List A century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
His rapid rise has drawn attention well beyond the cricket field reports indicate that even business schools have begun studying his career trajectory as a case study in talent development.

A Difficult Few Days Before the Final

Sooryavanshi record breaking knock came just days after an on field altercation overshadowed his form. In an earlier Super Over thriller against Sri Lanka A, India lost after he failed to connect with a yorker. As he walked back, a heated exchange broke out between him and a Sri Lankan player, reportedly triggered by taunts referencing his IPL fame. Match officials had to step in to defuse the situation.

Rather than let the incident affect him, Sooryavanshi responded in the only way that matters in cricket with his bat, delivering one of the most destructive innings of his young career in the very next meeting between the two sides.

Player of the Match and Series Triumph

For his all round impact on the contest, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named Player of the Match. His innings was the difference maker that gave India A the platform to post a match winning total, and his rapid rise continues to mark him as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket.

With this win, India A lifted the Tri Nation A Series trophy, capping off a tournament that will be remembered largely for one teenager fearless approach to the format biggest stage.
