The auction date for the Multan Sultans, champions of the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL), has officially been announced. The PSL management confirmed via their official social media accounts on X that the franchise auction will take place on February 9 in Lahore.
Five Companies Shortlisted for Multan Sultans Franchise
A total of five companies have been technically cleared to bid for the Multan Sultans franchise. Among them is Ali Tareen, who had previously left the franchise last year but is now returning to reclaim ownership.
Other bidders include Wally Tech and M Next Inc, both of which participated unsuccessfully in the recent Hyderabad and Sialkot franchise auctions. Additionally, CD Venture and Particle Ignite are new entrants making their debut in PSL auctions. This mix of experienced and new bidders is expected to make the competition fiercer than ever.
Background of the Auction Process
Two days prior, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the five shortlisted bidders after completing the technical evaluation process.
The formal auction process for selling the Multan Sultans ownership rights officially began on January 14, 2025. Interested companies and individuals were invited to submit their bids, initially set to close on January 30, 2025, but the deadline was later revised.
This auction was triggered after former owner Ali Tareen announced his exit from the franchise in November, following over a year of strained relations with the PCB. Subsequently, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi declared that after the current ownership contract ended on December 31, 2025, the board would assume control of the franchise. Initially, PCB had planned to operate the team for a year before auctioning it in 2027. However, following strong valuations from recent franchise auctions, PCB decided to expedite the sale.
Recent PSL Franchise Auction Highlights
In the historic auctions held last month at the Jinnah Convention Center, FKS Group and OZD Developers secured the Hyderabad and Sialkot franchises for PKR 175 crore and PKR 185 crore, respectively. These additions have increased the total number of PSL teams to eight, ahead of PSL Season 11, which begins on March 26. The players’ draft is scheduled for February 11.
