Bangladesh has been ruled out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved Scotland as their replacement. The decision follows a prolonged dispute involving security concerns, venue relocation demands, and administrative disagreements between Bangladesh and the ICC.

This development has significantly altered the tournament structure and is expected to impact Bangladesh cricket both competitively and financially.

Scotland Added to Group C of T20 World Cup 2026

According to reports from Indian media, Scotland has officially been included in the T20 World Cup 2026 in place of Bangladesh. The Scottish team has been placed in Group C, which already features:
  • England
  • West Indies
  • Nepal
  • Italy
With Scotland inclusion, Group C is now expected to deliver more competitive and closely contested matches. The move also provides Scotland with another valuable opportunity to prove itself at the global cricketing level.

ICC Rejects Bangladesh Appeal

Bangladesh had submitted a formal request to the ICC dispute resolution committee, seeking intervention in the matter. However, the committee rejected the appeal, stating that the issue fell outside its jurisdiction and no action could be taken.

This rejection effectively ended Bangladesh chances of remaining part of the tournament.

Security Concerns and Venue Dispute

The controversy began when Bangladesh refused to play its World Cup matches in India, citing security concerns. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) demanded that its matches be shifted from Kolkata and Mumbai to Sri Lanka.

The ICC did not approve this request, leading to further escalation of the dispute and ultimately Bangladesh exclusion from the tournament.

IPL Controversy Intensifies the Situation

The situation worsened after IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. In response, the Bangladeshi government imposed a ban on IPL broadcasts within the country.

This move added a political dimension to the issue, prompting serious concerns within the ICC.

Financial Losses and Possible ICC Action

As a result of the decision, Bangladesh could face an estimated financial loss of $27 million (approximately 325 crore taka). The ICC is also investigating potential political interference in the matter.

If it is proven that the Bangladesh Cricket Board acted under government pressure, the ICC may suspend Bangladesh membership, which would have long term consequences for the country international cricket participation.
